To MGP2006 colleagues:

Does -- or should -- the law allow Dow Jones & Co. directors to consider the public interest as they weigh whether to sell to News Corp.? I'm looking for guidance and advice on this point. Can you help?

A June 21 article by Los Angeles Times writer Joseph Menn quoted Charles Elson, director of the University of Delaware's Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, as saying that if the directors decide to sell the company, their legal obligation is to get the highest possible price. The law in Massachusetts at least -- where Dow Jones owns small dailies -- appears to allow other factors to be considered.

Fellow journalist:

Please read the statement below from Free Press.

Last summer, at the MGP2006 conference at UMass, I spoke about the danger that one day all of the "presses" on which America's newspapers are now printed will be virtual -- news will travel on the network. I spoke about the danger that one day it would be possible for the people who control the network to begin making business and editorial judgement about when -- in effect -- the press roles.

HERE'S WHAT I SAID (CLICK ON AUDIO STREAM):

The folks at "giraffe prospect" TruthOut.org have been posting for the
last several days about alleged problems getting their email messages to
subcribers who use such services as AOL, Hotmail, MSN, WebTV and Yahoo.
Follow their saga at:

At one level this seems like trouble with spam filtering. But TruthOut
seems to be having trouble getting a clear explanation from the ISPs. The
episode is worth watching in light of:

Robert Cox, head of the Media Bloggers Association, advises that he's
negotiated blogger credentials for the GOP debate in Baltimore next week. He writes: "This is a last minute but I wanted to let you know that the MBA is working with PBS to help them identify bloggers to be credentialed for next week's GOP debate in Baltimore . . . I thought you might know some folks who might want to be credentialed or even want to send out that info on your list, asking folks to contact me via email or cell phone if they are interested.

Here is the main page for the event

JTM-DC participant Barb Hipsman of Kent State University sends along a link to a downloadable PDF of a report just finished by one of her colleagues at Kent State -- Joe Murray . . . an analytic summary of the options facing journalism programs if they want to remain relevant.

He titles it: "Adapt or Die: A 10-Step Survival Guide for Journalism Schools Stuck in the Fourth Estate."...

David Beers, the experienced magazine editor and MGP2006 alum who helped found
The Tyee.ca in Vancouver, B.C., three years ago, is concerned about the decline
in the quality of dialog on the Internet. He's summarized the issue with
relevant links on The Tyee website and is hoping there are solutions
lurking. Any ideas?
